Kirsty Williams AM has called for the importance of agriculture to Wales’ environment to be fully recognised.
It comes after she made the opening speech at NFU Cymru’s inaugural ‘Sustainable Agriculture: Food, Farming and the Environment’ Conference, in which she highlighted the important role farmers play in maintaining the environment.
Agriculture is particularly significant to Wales’ environment. Utilised agricultural land comprises 86.3% of the total land area in Wales, compared to 69% in England, 70.7% in Scotland, and 74.78% in Northern Ireland.
Speaking after the event, Kirsty said:
“I was delighted to speak at this important event, the first of its kind in Wales.
“I think it’s important to recognise that farmers not only produce food but over many centuries have created and maintained a unique countryside, which continues to provide the backdrop to our tourism sector.
“Farmers provide habitats for wildlife, enhance our soil and water, and have a vital role to play in ensuring Wales hits clean air targets.
“Of course, sustainable agriculture is only going to get more important and has a crucial role to play in tackling the climate crisis. I am proud that this industry always stands ready to respond to the needs of our nation and is ready to do so again.”
