A MOUNTAIN-biker based near Oswestry has finished in the top spot at another international event.

Wales' Rachel Atherton finished first at the Union Cycliste International (UCI) Mountain Bike Downhill World Cup held in Fort William.

The five-time women's world champion who trains in Llangynog crossed the line in five minutes and 15.5 seconds to take the gold medal.

The 31-year-old told the BBC: "That was the most nail-biting thing ever.

"I was in the hot-seat there and me and Tracey [Hannah] were neck-and-neck.

"She must have run that middle section really strong, I couldn't have run it any faster than that.

"I'm absolutely buzzing, a win at Fort William is special enough without doing it on the Atherton bike.

"I can't believe it's just happened."
