North West Counties League Division One South

New Mills 3

Ellesmere Rangers 2

Another valiant display by Ellesmere Rangers rounded off a difficult season for the north Shropshire side away at New Mills.

There was just pride to play for with Rangers already set for a finish in the bottom two prior to kick off.

An early goal for the visitors rewarded them for their good start, however two goals by the opposition before the break sent them into half-time a goal down.

Rangers drew level after the hour mark, before a penalty in the 90th minute for the hosts was fired into the net to inflict a 25th league defeat on Rangers.

William Wells opened the scoring after 13 minutes as they looked to finish their season on a high.

The home team started to grow into the fixture after the goal and eventually replied with a goal of their own.

Remeece Brown ran at the Rangers defence and cut in from the left before firing his effort past Richard Cowderoy.

Just seven minutes later, Jake Ambrose scored a second for Mills – Brown played a well-timed through-ball to send Ambrose in on goal.

In the second half, the Ellesmere side came out fighting and were able to restore parity when a long ball into the area fell nicely at the feet of James Durman who finished off his effort from close-range.

A draw seemed a fair result for the afternoon, but late in the game a decision to award a penalty to New Mills by the referee saw Joe Rothwell convert his effort from the spot, to take the three points at the very end.

Rangers finish their season in 19th with 25 points.
