I WAS interested to see Danny Rose’s comments about not being able to wait to retire because of racism in football.

It’s not a nice place to be in when you’re talking about retiring from fans’ attitudes and things but it’s got so bad in the past few weeks where it would make you think twice about wanting to be on the pitch and wanting to be in that environment. I can’t speak about being in that environment but it’s a sad state of affairs. If you look at that Juventus’s Moise Kean, 19 years of age, and people from his own team questioning what he’s doing.

We’ve spoken about it previously and something has to be done. They say they should dock points from a team but it’s not the team’s fault, it’s the supporters’. Maybe they have to take a three or four game ban where they can have supporters in the stadium. Going back to Rose though, it’s obviously affecting him, you can see that from the international game against Montenegro, so I say it all the time: There’s no place for it and to hear someone wanting to cut their career short is not nice to hear.

We have to stand up to it and say we’re not going to come off the pitch, we’ll show you who’s boss. Kean’s example was right, where he went over to the fans like Sterling and showed the fans who’s boss.

Other racially-abused players did the same thing, and it’s easy for me to say it as I’ve not been in that position before but as a manager I would want players going on the pitch and say: “No, we’re bigger than this, we will carry on.”

I disagree with Giorgio Chiellini who said Kean should take ‘50-50’ of the blame and Massimiliano Allegri, who said he shouldn’t celebrate like that. Those comments were made from two very senior people in the game, one top player and a manager who has been one of the best managers in the game. It’s very naïve the way they’ve gone about it, rather that protecting their own player, their own youngster, they have let themselves down and now probably regret it. You can’t go back on it once you’ve said it though.

How does the player feel now? They wish they probably hadn’t have said it but I believe showing the reaction like Kean did is the best way to shut them up.
