AN AMATEUR boxing club near Oswestry enjoyed its home show for 2019 in St Martins.

Maelor ABC based in Cefn-Mawr put on a show with several fighters performing in front of a home crowd of more than 200 people at St Martins' Ifton Miners Welfare Institute.

There were 14 bouts to keep the large crowd entertained, each featuring a member of the Maelor ABC which is home to a handful of Welsh champions.

The home club had six winners and five runners-up, as well as a handful of skills bouts.

St Martins-based fighters Gary Richards and Harry Roberts, both Welsh champions in their respective weight categories, won their bouts on the day.

Gary beat Jack Jervis of Croxteth ABC in Liverpool while Harry overcame his opponent in John Fox of Stockbridge ABC in Manchester.

Fellow St Martins fighter and also Welsh Champion Thomas Roberts was runner-up in his bout with Sam Norris, also of Stockbridge ABC in Manchester.

Oswestry fighter Kane Rowbotham was runner up in his bout with Llay ABC fighter Joshua Pheonix.

Oswestry's Ethan Finney was runner up in his match-up with John Smith of West Wirral ABC.

Welsh champion and Oswestry-based fighter Cory Jones came out on top in his contest with Ethan Rutter of Second City Birmingham ABC.

Thomas Jones beat Kalum Guest of Llay ABC, while Leighton Turnbull beat Austin Nelson of West Wirral ABC.

Josh Pilgrim was runner up in his contest with Dan Thomas of Wrexham ABC and Kyle Roberts was runner up after his battle with Jac Hughes of Denbigh ABC.

Charlie Roberts tasted victory after his win over Sam Ledwith of JCS ABC.

Also in action were Bowie Diamond and Chris Phillips in skills bouts.

Coach David Jones said: "I would like to thank all the clubs who took part as well as all the officials who helped the day run as well as it did.

"I would also like to thank the Ifton Miners Welfare Institute in St Martins, without the venue, the event would not happen, so thanks to them.

"Finally, thanks to everyone who came along to support the lads."
