THERE was an unusual addition to the scenery along the canal in Chirk Bank on the weekend with a car found partially submerged in the water.

Residents in the area woke on the morning of Sunday, March 31 to find a silver Ford Focus was submerged in the canal beside a private road near the Aqueduct Cottages.

The car appeared to have been abandoned in the early hours of Sunday morning, with police and recovery teams working to remove the vehicle from the canal later in the morning.

Fiona James, manager of Paws and Tails doggy day care, lives along the private stretch of road, and said she believes the car had fallen into the canal between 3am and 4am.

She said: “The road alongside the cottages is private and there is a sign to say so – it’s normally only used by either residents or people from the Canal and River Trust.

“The road narrows to a path the further it runs along the canal.

“The driver of the vehicle must have thought they could get somewhere down there and then tried to reverse out when it got too narrow and ended in the canal.

“It looks like they tried to reverse out by looking at the way it had fallen in and the markings on the grass.”

West Mercia Police were called to the incident on Sunday morning to resolve the issue.
