North West Counties League Division One South

Rylands 3

FC Oswestry Town 0

FC OSWESTRY Town’s push for the title was dealt a blow as they were beaten by league leaders Rylands on the weekend.

Town’s seven-game unbeaten run in the league came to an end away at the league’s top side who are now just one win away from winning the title.

The hosts were two goals ahead at the break through Stuart Wellstead and Tom Freeman, before a third goal late into the second half sealed the victory and dealt a big blow to Town’s end of season push towards the very top end of the table.

Both teams started the game cautiously, knowing three points would be huge in this top-of-the-table clash.

Despite the even start, Rylands were able to take the lead after 25 minutes when Wellstead fired home the opener.

Town tried clawing back level and came close with several half chances, however the hosts were able to hold on to their lead.

With two minutes of the first half left to play, Rylands broke through, eventually finding Tom Freeman who found the net to double Rylands’ before the break.

Town returned to the pitch trying to create as many chances as they were able to despite struggling with the condition of the pitch at Gorsey Lane.

A tense second half saw both sides looking for the game’s third goal which would be crucial in shaping the rest of the afternoon.

Spectators had to wait until two minutes from time for the ball to be in the back of the net again, but the goal for Rylands’ Liam Moran was ruled out for offside.

The home side sealed the victory just a minute after the disallowed goal when Warren Gerrard found his way through and beat Mason Springthorpe in the Town net to make it 3-0.

FC Oswestry Town now sit sixth in the table with five games left. They play Stockport Town at Park Hall on Saturday.
