Young eco warriors at Llanfechain Church in Wales Primary School are celebrating after winning a whole year of paper recycling and document storage.

The pupils, led by members of the school’s Eco Council, took part in a Christmas card recycling competition and as a result won the prize from Oswestry-based company Evastore.

Several schools from across Powys and Shropshire took part in the competition and the results were calculated using a formula which divided the total weight of cards collected by the number of children in the school. With more than 40 pupils, Llanfechain School collected an impressive 1.243 kg per pupil, making them the clear winner.

Gary Tait, Evastore general manager, said: “The competition was a great success and we look forward to doing it again later this year, with more schools getting involved. Overall, we collected enough cards to save approximately 10 fully grown trees! The cards were shredded at our premises and then baled and sent off to UK paper mills to be recycled into tissue material.”

Acting Headteacher Rhoanne Clark said: “I am extremely proud of the efforts of everyone within the Llanfechain School Community who helped with the Christmas card recycling competition.

“We are obviously very pleased with the outcome and the project has helped to raise pupil’s awareness of the importance of recycling within the community and the wider environment.”
