MORE needs to be done to give youngsters something to do according to a Chirk councillor.

Councillor Sarah Williams of Chirk Town Council said there are not enough activities for children in the area to enjoy.

The issue was briefly discussed at last month’s town council meeting when it was suggested the local authority should look into options to provide activities and clubs for younger people to take participate in.

Cllr Williams admitted that she was not sure of a resolution, but was aware something needs to be done.

“I’m not sure what the answer is myself,” she said.

“The youth clubs are all gone – the only things available to offer for kids around Chirk is Scouts or football.

“Not everyone is interested in those things.

“Football is great to watch on the telly for a lot of people, but you have to have a real love for football to want to play it.

“There’s nothing for teenage kids to do in the area, especially teenage girls.

“There seems to be no funding for children or teenagers,” she added.

Cllr Williams said she believes the lack of youth facilities and groups can lead to teenagers meeting up in the area and misleading the older generation into thinking they are up to no good.

She continued: “I used to love the youth club when I was growing up, it was almost like a hub for a lot of youngsters.

“Due to funding and not being able to get the volunteers to run it or generate the interest sometimes, youth clubs don’t always work out.

“The lack of things to do can lead kids to meeting up out on the streets and they then get a bad wrap because it looks as though they’re doing nothing.

“They’re not all bad.”
