“WHEN are they going to do something?”

That was the question asked by a Wrexham County Borough Councillor in the midst of multiple collisions on roads between Oswestry and Ruabon.

Councillor Terry Evans spoke after the incidents which took place on the stretch of the A5 and A483 during the last week.

A man died in the early hours of the morning on March 20 after a collision on the A5, followed by an incident on the same day in which an elderly couple were knocked down after a van collided with them in Gobowen.

There was a further incident on the A5 on the morning of Thursday, March 21 and a collision between a HGV and a Mini on the afternoon of Monday, March 25.

Cllr Evans of Chirk believes something must be done to improve the safety of the stretch of road, however believes the cost of potential improvements may mean road users are kept waiting for fixes for a long time.

“Something needs to be done, we’ve been saying it for a long time now,” he said.

“It’s been a nightmare for people in the area over the past week in particular.

“When will we see something being done to benefit that route? I think it will still be a long way off.

“Whatever is done, it will cost mega money and it seems as though they opt for the cheapest resolutions, like with the new road markings in the middle of the bridge between Halton and Gledrid.”

Recent work conducted to improve safety on the route includes new road markings on the bridge crossing the Ceiriog Valley to discourage drivers from overtaking.

The Chirk South councillor believes more still needs to be done.

Cllr Evans added: “We’ve asked for speed restrictions before now, I think this is something that could make the road safer – not all accidents on the road are caused by cars speeding but having a camera might still make a difference.

“It is definitely an issue that the road is a single carriageway for the most part, but it’s something which would be hard to resolve.

“The two bridges on the route are not wide enough to accommodate two lanes – the price of new bridges would be astronomical.”

The incidents sparked a lot of reaction on social media.

Beki Roper said: “This is shocking. To [sic] many accidents are happening. It's about time something is done!”

Referring to the accident in which the man died, James Morgan commented: “Sad news to hear. RIP.

“Seems to me that Oswestry and surrounding areas have a very high rate of road traffic accidents sadly.”
