Oswestry Rugby Club 22

Oswestry School 10

Oswestry Rugby Club hosted the Keighley Cup game at Granville Park on the weekend.

The annual game is played between Oswestry Rugby Club and Oswestry School in memory of Nige Keighley

The Oswestry School side was captained this year by ex-pupil Adam Lloyd.

The Oswestry Rugby Club XV, captained by Nick Clay, kicked off as both sides looked to recreate last year’s classic.

A number of attacking moves were repelled by the school team before a move found Craig Howells, who scored the first try to make it 5-0 to the rugby club.

The school side looked to get back level immediately but found themselves pinned back in their own 22 again shortly after the try.

Mike Davies soon got the hosts’ second try which was converted by Noah Chunsi, making the score 12-0.

Oswestry School came back at the club and managed to score a try of their own, bringing the score back to 12-5.

The game then got bogged down as the pitch cut up and soon it was difficult to see the school side in their white jerseys that were now covered in mud.

Play continued and the club team were able to take the game back into the school half and eventually Fabrizio Gaito was able to score another try in the corner.

The kick was missed and at half-time Oswestry were leading the school 17-5.

Oswestry School had not given up and struck back at Oswestry, scoring their second try soon after the break to make it 17-10.

The Oswestry club answered back with some constant pressure which eventually paid off with James Booth getting the last score of the day making the final score 22-10.

The club retained the title for another year with the victory.

They return to action on Saturday, March 23 when the first team travel to face Eccles, and the second team are at home as they host Macclesfield.
