A COUNCILLOR has said action must be taken on a notorious junction before there are fatal accidents.

Councillor Dilys Gaskill, chairman of Llanymynech and Pant Parish Council, labelled the Llynclys Crossroads a “death trap” after three crashes there within the space of 10 days.

The stretch of road is used by more than 14,000 drivers each day, and has become an accident blackspot for motorists.

Cllr Gaskill said she was “stunned” to hear of the latest crash and said more needs to be done to prevent future incidents.

“It’s the third incident we’ve had in just over a week – so what are Highways England going to do about it?” she said.

“The junction is a death trap.

“We’ve been working to get a bypass since the 1990s. There has been some progress with it over the years, but everything creeps forward so slowly.”

Cllr Gaskill continued: “Of course, we’re supporting the idea of improving the road.

“Police are on our side with this, because they have to go out to these incidents whenever they happen.”

The three crashes happened on March 8, 11 and 18.

Cllr Gaskill believes the layout of the road is partly to blame and said it needs to be looked at before there are fatal crashes.

She added: “You have people stopping to turn across lanes, people just driving straight across without stopping – something needs to be done.

“Maesbury Road junction had to have multiple fatalities before they got traffic lights – we don’t want to have to wait for that.

“It is very concerning. To have three incidents in the space of a week surely can’t just be due to drivers’ errors alone. I think because we’re a little village tucked away, we’re almost brushed aside when things like this happen.

“We want to encourage tourism in our beautiful area, but to do that we have to ensure it’s safe here.”

“There is a high volume of traffic using the road, particularly on a Friday and Saturday.

“You have people travelling from the West Midlands, people travelling into Wales towards Bala – there is also a high volume of HGVs on there.

She added: “We’ve asked for a roundabout, but the spot is too close to a bridge and we can’t have traffic lights because it would be too confusing.”

A spokesman for Highways England said: “Safety is our top imperative and we’re looking at the A483 in terms of any further improvements that can be made such as additional road signage and road markings at Llynclys.”
