SCHOOLS in Llanfyllin and Llansilin are among those set to receive a major funding boost.

Powys secondary and primary schools will receive £2m investment in coming financial year as part of a major improvement plan, if a recommendation is approved by the county council’s cabinet.

The cabinet will be asked approve the improvement fund for works including improving disabled access, security work, improved sports facilities and classroom improvements to support the 21st century schools programme in the 2019/20 financial year.

Councillor Myfanwy Alexander, Cabinet member for learning and Welsh language, said: “The projects detailed in this document represent a substantial investment by the County Council in schools across the county as part of our ambition to provide all young people with appropriate learning environments for 21st Century Education.”

The planned works will include nearly £400,000 for major improvements at Ysgol Calon Cymru, Builth Wells for improve disabled access, toilet refurbishment and lift repairs.

Newtown’s Penygloddfa Primary School is earmarked for more than £70,000 investment for a new boundary wall and roof repairs.

Boiler, security work and disability improvement work at Llanfyllin High School is scheduled as part of the work at a cost or more than £150,000, as well as window improvement work worth £75,000 at Ysgol Bro Cynllaith, Llansilin.

Welshpool High School will also see improvement work costing £25,000 to improve the school’s all weather pitch and Rhayader Primary School will see more than £80,000 spent on health and safety improvements.

More than £400,000 will be invested in a number of schools around the county to improve energy efficiency.

The report will be considered by the cabinet on March 26.
