OSWESTRY Cambrian Rotary hosted the first session of its new community project last week.

The Grown-ups Playgroup welcomed a good number of attendees to the first session held at Sweeney Hall on Wednesday.

People were able to sit around and chat, but most chose to play Scrabble, Chinese Checkers, Chess, Cribbage and a lively Dominos group.

The idea behind the group is to encourage people in the area to come along and socialise in a friendly atmosphere.

Mike Lade of Oswestry Cambrian Rotary said: “Basically, it’s trying to embrace anyone in the community who might be lonely, isolated, or just want to get together and socialise.

“I developed the idea from initially talking to Sweeney Hall and said we’d play boules and croquet out on the lawn, to making it a playgroup with dominoes, cards, chess etc.

“So that’s where the idea of calling it a grown-ups playgroup.

“We are targeting people who might not get the chance to talk to people day in, day out – we have had a lot of interest so far, there was a great turnout on Wednesday, but we want to get the word out to get even more people along.

“We’re trialling it for three months but if we continue to get the level of interest that we’ve had so far, it will be carrying on.”

President Cath Baldry added: “We’re delighted with the amount of people that turned up last time, it was more than we expected.

“There’s lots of people who might enjoy the opportunity to involve themselves in a bit of social interaction.

“I think it’s good because it doesn’t tie people down to coming every Wednesday – they can pop in whenever they want to.”

At each session there is a voluntary donation of £2 which will go to the Rotary Foundation to supply drinkable water, education, medical services and so on to less fortunate parts of the world on Rotary sponsored projects.

The Grown-ups Play Group meet in the bar on Wednesday’s each week from 2.00pm to 4.00pm at the Sweeney Hall Hotel, Morda.
