A TENNIS club in Oswestry has raised more than £1,000 for charity in memory of a former head coach.

Oswestry Team Tennis (OTT) presented a cheque for £1,046.42 for Cancer Research UK.

The sum represented the club’s total fundraising efforts over the past eight months.

The appeal was dedicated to the club’s former head coach, Mike Markham, who died last April after being involved with the sport across Shropshire for more than 20 years.

Fundraising events in memory of Mike have been taking place over the past eight months.

The events varied across 15 activities which included a coffee and croissant day, competition matchdays, a club celebration day, an awards evening surplus and Sporting Challenge competition winnings waived.

Chairman of the OTT club Clive Knight said: “I am extremely pleased with the level of fundraising achieved by our children over this lengthy period.

“The commitment they have shown throughout to this worthy charity has been fantastic.

“I am sure Mike would be extremely proud of their efforts.”
