Ever listened to the bells at St Alkmund's and wondered how they work?

Well on Saturday, March 9, people will be given a chance to find out about your church bells and how they are rung.

St Alkmund’s Bell Ringers are opening up the tower at 11am and 2pm. Each session will last about one hour.

Visitors will climb the spiral staircase up the tower to look at the bells and be shown how they work.

Most of the bells are just over 300 years old although two were recast in 1767 and the tenor bell, which weighs nearly a ton, was replaced in 1842.

Next, attendees will descend half way down the tower to the ringing chamber and be shown the ropes.

There will be a chance to get a bell striking and see demonstrations of ringing.

If you are interested, especially if you think you might like to learn to ring the bells, come along at either 11am or 2pm.
