IN DECEMBER, the Advertizer spoke to TNS Futsal player Lee Phelan who was preparing to represent Great Britain in an international futsal tournament.

We caught up with Lee to talk about his experience.

“I feel like I’ve done enough to get considered for future squads,” said Lee, who played in all three games out in Italy during the first weekend of December.

“It was a bit of a whirlwind weekend and it all happened quite fast.

“We flew out early on the Saturday morning, arrived about midday and played two games that day.

“Then we stayed the night and played one more on the Sunday morning before flying back home that day.”

The 39-year-old scored in the fixture against Switzerland in Milan, and despite the Great Britain side losing their three games, Lee said it is an experience he will never forget.

“It was surreal to stand and listen to the national anthem before the games and know that you’re representing your country,” he said.

“It’s definitely up there with some of my best achievements in both futsal and football.”

Lee’s side were beaten 13-3 by eventual winners Italy and were narrowly beaten by France and Switzerland 3-2 and 8-6.

Being involved in games of such high standard is something the TNS man relished, insisting he hopes to do it again – and with the futsal World Cup coming up later this year, Lee hopes he will be considered for inclusion again.

He said: “I found the standard really high, but I felt as though I played well enough, there were some new lads in the squad who did well too.

“There’s a training camp coming up soon so I’m looking forward to that.

“Italy were the best side there, they battered us, but they went on to win the tournament, so it was clear they’re a very very good team.

“We knew the standard would be high over there before we went – futsal seems to have taken off really well in Europe over the past few years especially.

“The world cup is coming up this year in Argentina, so I’m hoping I’ll be able to do enough to be included in that squad.

“It would be a great experience just like this time was.”
