How Powys' schools ranked in new Welsh Government colour-coded support ratings

The National School Categorisation System, introduced in 2014, places schools across Wales into one of four colour-coded support categories - green, yellow, amber and red - to demonstrate the level of support they need.

GREEN

• A school in this category will receive up to four days of support
• Needing the least support
• Show the greatest capacity to improve along with the ability to support other schools

YELLOW

• A school in this category will receive up to 10 days of support

AMBER

• A school in this category will receive up to 15 days of support

RED

• A school in this category will receive up to 25 days of support
• Needing the most intensive support

All primary, secondary and special schools are included in the system.

The annual categorisation ratings takes into consideration how effectively schools are led and managed, the quality of learning and teaching, and the level of support the schools need to do better.

The most effective schools are ranked green and require just four days of support. Schools that require a greater need of support are ranked red and receive up to 25 days of support in a year.

The information, published on Thursday, January 31, shows that there has been an overall improvement in school performance across Wales but there is a small number of schools needing more support.

The biggest improver in Powys in this year's colour codes is Llandrindod Wells Primary School Cefnllys which has improved two places from red to yellow.

Cabinet Secretary for Education Kirsty Williams said: “I’m pleased to see that even more of our schools are now in the green and yellow categories, continuing on with the upward trend we have seen over the past few years.

“These schools have a key role to play in supporting other schools to improve by sharing their expertise, skills and good practice.

“The system has become more sophisticated over time and now allows for a much broader range of factors about a school’s ability to improve to be taken into account – leading to a tailored programme of support and intervention which meets the needs of all pupils.”
