A SHROPSHIRE councillor for Oswestry has said she hopes work on the new Morrisons site gets underway as soon as possible.

Plans for the new store on Shrewsbury Road were approved in December, but work is yet to get started.

Councillor Clare Aspinall is hoping the site can get put up quickly, and said she thinks the current state of the site is an eyesore for people coming into Oswestry.

“It would be nice to get the store up as quick as possible,” she said.

“It’s a bit of an eyesore for people coming into Oswestry from that direction at the moment.

“There are ongoing discussions regarding the roads to accommodate the site which may take time, but it would be nice to see them get going with it as soon as they can once that’s sorted.”

There are suggestions to see a roundabout put in place near the Smithfield site, in order to offer better access to the supermarket.

Cllr Aspinall added: “I think it’s a sensible spot for a supermarket – it’s the main route into Oswestry so it should bring people into town – especially with a petrol station on the site.

“It’s a better site for a Morrisons than the current Morrisons site in town – the new site should offer easier access than the current one.”
