A WORLD champion angler has shared some of his vast knowledge with pupils at his old secondary school.

BT Sport presenter Rob Hughes, winner of the 1996 World Carp Cup, paid a visit to the Marches School to speak with students who have an interest in fishing and answer their questions.

“It was great to head along to the Marches School to speak to the students about fishing, their aims and aspirations and to give them advice. It was a thoroughly enjoyable morning,” he said.

Rob, who attended the former Fitzalan School in the early 1980s won the World Carp Cup while working full-time as a solicitor.

He later pursued a professional fishing full-time career, winning the European Cup in 2000 and numerous other titles and becoming England manager in 2015.

Rob now presents On the Bank on BT Sport, having spent 15 years presenting on Sky Sports and is an angling ambassador for the national governing body.

He told the children how working hard in school and qualifying as a solicitor allowed him the freedom to chase his fishing dreams.

Graham Dyke, Marches School PE teacher and a keen angler, added: “We would like to thank Rob for visiting us and passing on words of advice to the students who enjoying fishing. During the spring, we do hope to start an after-school fishing club."
