PRIMARY school pupils are using Christmas trees helping to conserve a river and its fish using.
Around 20 Key Stage 2 Llanfechain Primary School helped Cain Valley River Group members turn last year's Christmas trees into bundles to create 'river revetment' protection – which will also create ideal conditions for fish to spawn and shelter from predators.
Rhoanne Clarke: Acting head-teacher at Llanfechain Primary School said: “Studying rivers and helping their local river Cain is a great way for our pupils to learn all about their environment.”
Under guidance from Dewi Morris and Andy Green, children tied two trees together to make some bundles.
In June Dewi and Andy will help the children secure them to a nearby riverbank of the River Cain to “slow the flow”, with support from the Severn Rivers Trust.
Dewi added: “ This is a great way for pupils to understand the important role that they can have to look after their environment in their everyday lives.”
