A NEW defibrillator has been unveiled at a community hub.

The Chirk AAAs Social Club now has two life-saving heart units on the site after the new one was unveiled on Friday evening.

There is now a defibrillator situated at the bowling green and one situated outside the club.

Pam Lewis worked at the social club for 18 years and decided to raise funds for a defibrillator to be located there.

She said: “I thought the club needed a defibrillator in particular with it being a sports club.

“We have a lot of sports going on here. We have football, cricket, bowls, and we have a lot of people who come down to watch.

“I think it’s needed especially because you hear stories of people suffering heart attacks while playing sports, so again it’s good to have it there so that it’s there if something like that does occur.

“Overall, it’s here for the use of the community should it be needed – it’s giving everyone the opportunity to help.”

Pam decided to raise funds for a defibrillator at the site after her husband had a heart attack last year.

She added: “The reason why I decided to do this is because of a family matter – my husband had a heart attack last year, and when something like that happens, you understand the importance of responding quickly.

“I raised money for them by writing to local businesses and firms for donations. I also raised money through quizzes at the social club.

“It’s the first time I’ve raised a big amount of money for something like this.

“I’m just pleased that the club has them now – it puts my mind at ease knowing they’re available for everyone to use.”

Pam went on to explain how she feels it should be a requirement for sports fields to have a defibrillator within a reasonable distance.

She said: “I personally believe all sports fields should have one just in case.

“No-one knows when an incident could occur, but if it does, that’s when you desperately need a defibrillator.

“So it’s important to have them around.

“I’m just happy they’re here for everyone to use if needed now.”
