The manager of a Chirk restaurant has denied that the company has intentionally avoided paying taxes.

Danny Abdul of the Hot Grill Restaurant, formerly known as Chirk Tandoori, says the company has done nothing wrong after it was named and shamed on the HMRC website in the latest list of tax defaulters.

The government body says the restaurant failed to pay more than £80,000 in tax between September 2012 and November 2016, which it must repay along with £37,000 in costs.

Danny has denied any wrongdoing by the company, and believes the restaurant should not be named on the list.

“We can’t give a reason for why we’ve supposedly been dodging tax, because we haven’t been,” he said, “It’s all made up.

“We have since checked our books and we’re paying our VAT and taxes quarterly.

“We’ve not heard anything else since our restaurant name was published.

“We are open as normal here and everything is running as it usually would.”

The Chirk-based restaurant was one of two in the Wrexham region to be named on the list, with Mehrab Ltd, formerly known as Tava, also listed.

HMRC are unable to comment on individual incidents, but a spokesman said: “Publishing taxpayers’ names is not something we do lightly.

“However, we want the local community to know we are tackling deliberate defaulters and it encourages others to get back on track.”

“Most people declare the tax that is due, but there are a small minority who try to evade their responsibilities.”

“The people named have cheated the Exchequer, and that’s unfair to those who pay their tax.”
