A CHIRK youngster having treatment for cancer brought in Christmas gifts to cheer up other children at Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

Ollie Hudson took TVs, PlayStation 4s and other consoles and games to the hospital for the children on the cancer ward.

Ollie was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia last year and has received treatment at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool and Wrexham Maelor.

Family and friends of Ollie spent parts of 2018 fundraising to donate money to Alder Hey to thank the staff there.

Lars Stanley Hughes came up with the idea of spending the remaining funds on gifts for the children at the cancer ward in the Wrexham hospital to use.

He said: “When we had the money in, we found that a lot of cheques were made to Alder Hey.

“Alder Hey have been brilliant, but Ollie has some of his treatment at Wrexham Maelor Hospital as well, so we wanted to give something to them too.

“Because we had to wait until around November to see how much money we had left, we decided to wait until Black Friday to spend more than £1,000 on PlayStation 4s, Nintendo Switches, flat-screen TVs, games and more.

“The Saturday before Christmas, Ollie was heading to Wrexham Maelor for treatment, so we went there early, and he delivered the gifts himself which was nice.”

One of the fundraising events took place late in 2018 which saw a group take on a climb up Snowdon.

The climb raised a large sum along with other events through the year.

Lars spoke about how overwhelming the support was.

“Ollie’s mum couldn’t believe how much support there was from people – the nurses were blown away by it too,” he said.

“Looking ahead, we’d like to get involved with getting something done to help improve the facilities at the cancer ward in Wrexham, as well as continuing to raise money for both hospitals.

“We’d like to give a massive thanks to everyone who gave support and helped us raise funds to be able to do this.

“The extra money has allowed us to provide for the hospital in Wrexham and to give the children something to occupy themselves when they head in for the treatment.

“We’d like to thank Fiona Roberts and Paula Roberts of Curry’s in Wrexham – they helped us to get some great discounted deals on Black Friday which allowed us to get the most we could for the children at the hospital.”
