Residents living in the Builth Wells area are being told to ignore any phone calls claiming to be from HMRC.
Dyfed-Powys Police have issued advice saying that people should immediately hang up if they receive a call.
It follows a high number of reports of scam calls in the Brecon and Builth Wells areas.
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) say that they are aware of an automated phone call scam which tells the person who's received the call that HMRC is filing a lawsuit against them and to press one to speak to a caseworker to make a payment.
The scam often targets elderly and vulnerable people.
Scam calls are used by fraudsters to con someone out of their money or to obtain their personal information to commit fraud by deceiving people into believing they are speaking to representative of a trusted company or agency such as a government department.
A police spokesperson said: "We are receiving a high number of reports of scam calls in the Brecon and Builth Wells areas, with callers claiming to be from HMRC.
"Don't engage with these calls - hang up immediately, and tell anyone who might be vulnerable to scammers to do the same."
