Julie Evans, who organised a Christmas Day event for some of the most isolated people in our community, thanks all those who helped make the day such a success...

AFTER a few busy days over the Christmas period, I am compelled to write and thank everyone involved in putting together Oswestry Community Christmas.

The day was much enjoyed by all I think, and certainly there was a good feeling of friendship to general good humour in the Parish Centre.

Without exception, all of my lovely volunteers worked like Trojans over December 23, 24 and 25. Their work began by decorating the room and the tree, and sorting all the generous gifts.

December 24 was very was very busy indeed for the second team of volunteers who, guided by our lovely cook Carol Daley, got all the veg ready and put everything as far ahead as possible for Christmas Day – including laying the tables etc.

And finally came the big day, and yet another team of volunteers who helped with the cooking, waited at table, welcomed the guests as they arrived and made copious amounts of tea and coffee – all while smiling and laughing.

They then cleared away and washed up too! It was lovely also to have a visit from our mayor, Councillor Sandy Best, during the day.

We tried to ensure that every guest went home with a big bag full of gifts – plus some treats to enjoy later!

Special thanks must go not only to Carol the cook, but also to the Reverend Harvey Gibbons who allowed us to room the room, and my dear friend Gerry Howe, who printed all the posters, tickets and menus – and was always available to help with advice and ideas.

He was also there for cleaning up at various times in between his extremely busy Christmas music schedule.

Also, thanks to Geoff the Dial-a-Ride driver, who picked up and took home various guests.

Finally, thank you to everyone who donated items to Oswestry Community Christmas. Goods have poured in from shops and supermarkets around the town as well as individuals.

Thank you to everyone and have a Happy New Year!
