An Oswestry service station has been busy raising money to send produce to a foodbank.

The staff at the Esso service station on Mile End roundabout have left buckets out for members of the public to give spare change, and in just three weeks the team has collected £590.09.

This money has been converted into food, which has been given to volunteers at the Oswestry and Borders Foodbank, who will place the food items into hampers for those in need over the festive period.

Linda Wainwright, assistant manager at the garage, said: "We do a charity fundraiser here each year.

"We wanted to raise money for the foodbank and give back to the community."

Over five years, the initiative at the station has seen more than £5,000 raised for various charities.

In the past the station has also raised more than £9,000 for Children in Need.

Kath Davies, a volunteer and trustee at the Oswestry Foodbank, which is part of the Trussel Trust, said that produce is needed at this time of year.

"This donation will go towards our Christmas stock and it's greatly appreciated," she said.

"We're currently busy packing 120 Christmas hampers for recipients.

"The need for foodbanks has noticeably increased over the past few years. But thanks to the phenomenal generosity of the community and businesses in the area, we are able to give people some food this Christmas."
