FOUR masked men duped their way into the home of two vulnerable people in Johnstown and took a large sum of money and jewellery.

The frightening incident happened on Friday, at about 9.30pm when the gang, wearing gloves and balaclavas, knocked on the door of a property in Hoel Offa, claiming to be police officers "looking for drugs".

Once inside, the men were able to take a substantial amount of cash and jewellery and although no violence was used during the incident, the two pensioners were left shaken, very upset and in a state of shock.

A spokesman for North Wales Police said: "We received a report of a burglary at about 9.35pm on Friday evening, that four men had conned their way into the home of two vulnerable people claiming to be police officers.

"We would ask people to always ask for ID when answering the door and that any legitimate police operation would involve a warrant."

It is believed the four men made off in a vehicle following the burglary and the police are liaising with the family and carrying out an investigation. including any CCTV footage, which might lead and assist the police to catch those responsible.

Johnstown Councillor David A Bithell said: "This was a despicable act which targeted the most vulnerable people of our society. It has upset the whole community and I sincerely hope the police catch those responsible and are brought to justice.

"In the meantime family, neighbours and friends are supporting the family during this very traumatic time."
