THE MP for North Shropshire insists he will still not be supporting the Prime Minister’s Brexit negotiations, despite the fact she won last night’s vote of confidence.

Owen Paterson submitted a letter to head of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady, on Tuesday evening, which triggered the vote of no confidence in Theresa May.

Despite Mrs May winning the vote, Mr Paterson maintains that he will not be supporting the current negotiations.

His letter criticised the PM for failing to prepare for a no-deal Brexit.

Mr Paterson today (Thursday) told the Advertizer: “If you take out the 163 representatives on the payroll, there are 154 backbenchers, of which more than 75 per cent voted against the government.

“She really has to listen now to those of us who are concerned about what happens with the deal.

“With almost a third of her party voting against her she has to understand that a lot of us feel as though she is failing to deliver our clear manifesto pledges to leave Single Market, Customs Union and remit of ECJ.

“I don’t think she’s going to get the changes to the backstop that she’s hoping for.

“It seems clear that her deal will not get through Parliament – she must return to the Free Trade Agreement offered by President Tusk.

“I won’t be supporting her plan as it stands.”
