SEVEN neighbours in Holywell got an early Christmas present when they won £30,000 each after their postcode was announced as the winner of People’s Postcode Lottery’s Street Prize.

Welsh People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador and This Morning presenter Matt Johnson was knocking on doors and ringing bells in West Drive on Monday with a camera crew in tow ready to capture winners’ reactions.

He delivered golden envelopes containing the surprise cheques to lucky winners including Robert Tomlinson, a 56-year-old kitchen assistant at a nearby nursing home for people with dementia.

He said: “I started playing People’s Postcode Lottery because it raises money for such good causes, but I never thought anything like this would happen to someone like me.

“I’ll do some home improvements and spend some money on the grandkids.

"We’ll have a great Christmas and next year we’ll go on a camping holiday in Wales.

“Why go abroad? Wales has everything. I‘ve got my eye on a nice new stereo to play my LPs on too.

"I’m a big fan of ‘the King’, Elvis Presley.”

Civil servant Angelina Casey, 43, made some special preparations when she found out about her People’s Postcode Lottery win.

She said: “At first I thought it was a joke when I found out that I’d won.

“When I was told that a camera crew would be visiting, I even washed the front door.

“It was a real shock to see Matt, and when I saw that golden envelope, I just couldn’t wait to see what was in it. I still can’t believe it.

“My daughter and I can have a great Christmas now. I think I’ll decorate the house and maybe treat myself to a spa day somewhere nice with a friend, too.”

Fellow winner Jane Davies, a 52-year-old carer, was joined by her husband Colin when she was presented with her prize.

She said: “We’ve had a pretty rubbish couple of years, so this is absolutely amazing – and just before Christmas too.

“It was so exciting to see the guys in red coats walking up our street with a nice big cheque.

“I never win anything, but I started playing People’s Postcode Lottery after I saw the adverts on TV. You’ve got to be in it to win it.”

Secretary Amanda Miller, 54, said: “This is beyond my wildest dreams. I never thought it would happen to me and it means the world.

“I’m a single mum and my daughter and I have not had a holiday together since 2010. We’d both love to go to New York and this means that now I can treat her.”

With a minimum of 32 per cent from every ticket going to charity, players of People’s Postcode Lottery have now raised £371 million for good causes across Great Britain and internationally.

Local charities that are supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery include The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, which received £20,000 this year to offer emotional support to people with cancer, Flintshire’s 1125 C.I.C, which recently received £2,000 for teaching business skills to young homeless people, and Home-Start Flintshire, which was awarded over £9,000 last year to train volunteer money management advisers.

People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador, Matt Johnson, presented the winners with their cheques. He said: “It was wonderful to be back home in Wales delivering such wonderful news.

“It’s a fantastic feeling to be able to spread some festive joy in our red jackets.”
