A CHIRK councillor has spoken out at the lack of safety precautions on a busy stretch of road in the area.

Roadworks on the Ceiriog viaduct stretch of the A5 saw the road closed for three nights last week while engineers worked on repairing some of the panels on the side of the bridge.

The road has had a reduced speed limit of 50mph for the past few weeks, however after the completion of the works, the speed limit is back up to 60mph.

Wrexham County Borough Councillor Terry Evans has expressed his discontent with the lack of safety procedures on the bridge, and fears that an accident could be fatal in the future.

He said: “I’ve been saying for years that the bridge needs either concrete or steel barriers either side to prevent cars hitting the outer railings should an accident occur.

“As you travel up and down the country you can see that these kinds of barriers are implemented everywhere, so why aren’t the engineers listening and putting it into place here?

“They’re not dealing with the problem, despite the fact there is an obvious solution. It’s very ignorant of them.

“They’re not paying enough attention to the fact that the bridge is very dangerous.

“I voiced my concerns with our MP at a meeting years ago, but still not enough has been done.

“The danger it poses is avoidable – somebody is going to be killed on there one day.”

Cllr Evans also spoke about how the closures of the busy route has a knock-on effect for areas like Chirk, which become much busier because of diversions.

He added: “When they carry out repairs, it causes mayhem in Chirk. It took months for them to repair the bridge after the last incident.

“Around 40,000 vehicles use that bridge every day and that is diverted through places like Chirk when they carry out repairs.”
