A TOWN has been thanked for their efforts in the safe finding of a pensioner.

David Collins, 79, of Buckley was reported as missing after going out to walk his dog Oscar and residents of the town came together to ensure he was found.

Rachel Collins, wife of David, wrote on Facebook thanking residents and saying he was remaining in hospital but was doing well.

She wrote: “I would like to thank everyone who went out in the wind and rain last night looking for David, you all are true hero’s, it confirms my belief that there are some really good people in this world (especially in Buckley).

“The police, paramedics and ambulance crew were superb I can’t thank or praise them enough. Once again thank you, those I know and those I don’t – you all contributed to a happy ending.”

David’s dog, Oscar, stayed with him and kept him warm until he heard someone moving around and then barked to get their attention.

Georgina Millington, niece, told the Leader that Oscar was a trained guide dog before going to live with David.

She said: “I just want to pass on my heartfelt thanks to everyone who tirelessly searched and spread the word. Buckley is an amazing town.”

A collection has been started in Gerrard’s shop in Buckley, where David’s other niece Sylvia Harvey works, in a bid to raise funds for guide dogs and a dementia charity.

Residents of Buckley have also nominated Oscar for an award on Facebook, for staying with his owner and Facebook users have backed the idea.

John Spooner commented on the Buckley Residents Group: “I have nominated and used the following words.

“An elderly confused gentleman went out with his dog Oscar and went missing at 3pm staying out overnight in atrocious weather. Huge search operation including police helicopter failed to locate them.

“The following day Oscar was seen in a garden and led searchers to his owner who was then taken to hospital. Oscar is an ex guide dog and did as he was trained and stayed with the man all night. This dog is a life-saving hero.

“Feel free to copy and paste. I have also attached a photo of Oscar the hero! Come on let’s get nominating in the spirit of Christmas.”
