Highways officials have given their backing for plans to build 150 homes in Oswestry.

The proposal to build off Middleton Road was submitted by Jennings Estates Ltd in December 2017.

But it was delayed while Highways England reviewed its impact on the local roads network.

Concerns were also raised about the accumulative impact with plans to build 600 homes on neighbouring land.

Catherine Brookes, divisional director at Highways England, said it would be supported but with conditions, including plans for improvement works to Mile End roundabout, the creation of a construction traffic management plan, and details of reserved matters to be put to the body.

She continued: "Highways England has been working with Shropshire Council to explore further opportunities for funding for a more substantial improvement of the affected junction in this location. Should external funding opportunities come forward it would potentially require match funding from local planned developments including the scheme here under consideration. Such funding may, or may not, become available during the lifetime of any planning permission that may be granted to this application.

"As such Highways England has sought to recommend an approach to planning conditions that will allow either eventuality to be easily adopted as may be appropriate at the time the applicant comes to discharge planning conditions."

A decision on the proposal will be made by Shropshire Council in due course.
