THE Rhayader community Christmas tree, believed to be the tallest in Wales, which is put up by hand, went up on Sunday, marking its 60th anniversary.
The tree was felled at Troedrhydrain in the Elan Valley and dozens of volunteers helped put it up in its usual central position, adjacent to the clock tower memorial.
With the base trimmed and plenty of manpower on the ropes the tree was up in no time.
A presentation of plaques celebrating their long service to the Christmas tree committee was made to Emrys Price, David Evans, John Heal-Humphreys and Michael Bennett.
The tree will be the focus for the 60th annual Community Carol Singing night which will take place around the tree from 7.30pm on Saturday, December 22.
With the town’s Christmas lights, the tree is also a focus of the town’s major festive celebration ‘A Very Rhayader Christmas’ this Saturday, December 8.
There is no parade this year so the big celebration is centred at the Smithfield Market where there will be a large marquee for Christmas-themed stalls; music and entertainment.
There will also be the annual Fun Run, as well as fairground rides.
Father Christmas will be paying a visit along with Rhayader’s own Holly King.
