Councillors in Wem are being asked to consider bringing the mayoral awards for 2019 under the official roof of the Town Council.

The awards, which recognise the hard work and dedication of individuals and groups in Wem, are currently an independent event ran directly by the mayor, such as the efforts undertaken by former council chair Councillor Edward Towers in 2017/18.

But councillors will vote at the full town council meeting on Thursday – which has been brought forward ahead of the break for Christmas – whether to make the event part of Wem's annual calendar of events.

They will also discuss and then vote whether to return donations given by local businesses and individuals should funding the event become the council's responsibility.

Other items on the agenda for the meeting, which starts at 7pm in the Roden Suite at Edinburgh House in New Road, include discussion of a quote for heating the Groundsman Shed over the winter months.

In the last meeting, held on November 29, town clerk Penny O'Hagan recommended that councillors vote to install appropriate heating as a 'duty of care'.

However, a new quote was sought and will be discussed at the meeting.

There is one planning application for the consideration of councillors, with the proposed building of two blocks of a residential care home in land off Mill Street, Wem.

The plans are for 50 units with communal facilities as well as the formation of car parking and a diversion of a public right of way.

There will be an update concerning a meeting with Transport for Wales about future plans for Wem Train Station, which took place last week.

Cllr Chris Mellings, who sits on both Wem and Shropshire councils, was expected to have attended the meeting with a member of the public who wrote to Transport for Wales to discuss a potential bridge at the station.

There will be an update about a visit to Leek Building Society in Markey Drayton, with possible plans to fill the now empty Barclays Bank in the High Street.

Councillors will also be asked to purchase a battery-powered speaker.
