A GIRL with cerebral palsy and her family became real life superheroes to raise funds for the facility that treats her.

Lydia Griffiths, 14, and her family, from Chirk, have raised more than £2,000 for the Movement Centre in Gobowen by taking on the Superhero Series triathlon and other fundraising events.

'Team Griffiths' - made up of parents Jo and Darren, Lydia and her twin sisters Maddison – took on the three legs of the triathlon event at Dorney Lake, Windsor.

Lydia said: "The whole experience was amazing, I am so glad I competed the triathlon alongside my family as it shows that even with a disability you can overcome challenges."

Darren, 46, and Lydia started off with a 400 metre swim in the cold Dorney Lake.

After the swim, Darren and Lydia got onto a bike to complete a 10 kilometre leg of the triathlon.

The pair were given a bicycle to use on the day by Quest 88, which worked in the same way as a tandem bike.

"It was amazing to see so many inspirational people in one place all achieving their own individual goals," Lydia added.

"I would like to thank everyone for helping me raise money for The Movement Centre and I know this money will be put to really good use helping other disabled children."

The Movement Centre, which is based at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, provides specialist therapy to help children with movement disabilities reach their full potential.

They then handed over to Jo, 44, and Maddison to complete the triathlon with 2.5km a run.

Team Griffiths raised £1,142 for The Movement Centre with the challenge through sponsorship, cake sales and a sponsored walk, with help from Jo's colleagues at NatWest in Oswestry.

The bank provided a donation of £1,000 to reach the final total.

Curtis Langley, fundraising and marketing officer at The Movement Centre said, “We appreciate all the hard work the Griffiths family has put in, not only completing the Triathlon, but all their fundraising efforts. We can’t thank them enough! A huge thank you must also Natwest for their fantastic support.”
