Hay St Mary’s headed to the summit of the Spar Mid Wales League Second Division following a 4-3 victory over mid-table Dyffryn Banw, taking advantage as Newbridge-On-Wye slipped to a surprise defeat at Borth.

Goals from Jack Evans (two), Matty Tong and Jack Biggs were just enough to secure a vital three points for the Saints, despite going behind early on.

Banw struck first in a lively encounter through Alwyn Jones who weaved his way through the Saints defence before firing a fizzing strike into the bottom corner, but the visitors’ joy was short lived as Hay struck back through Tong, who slotted home after good run down the left hand side by Brendan Hackett, before Evans then netted a quick fire double to see Hay St Mary’s lead 3-1 at the break.

Banw came out with all guns blazing at the start of the second half and ten minutes in to a see-saw encounter they found themselves level at 3-3.

Gerallt Davies nodded home from a corner to give the visitors hope, before Richard Williams found the top corner to equalise.

But with ten minutes left on the clock the drama was far from over as right back Tom James whipped in a pin-point cross onto the head of top scorer Jack Biggs who made no mistake.

Elsewhere in the division Newbridge-On-Wye slipped to defeat at mid-table Borth United.

Goals from Jake Bufton and Ollie Woods weren’t enough for the Wyesiders as a brace from Jonathan Evans and Guto Huws saw the Crows to victory.

Rhayader Town earned the Radnorshire bragging rights with victory over Presteigne, as goals from Ryan Addison and Jamie Evans moved the Red Kites up to 5th in the table, six points off the top.

Third placed Montgomery kept pace with the leaders following a 3-1 victory at home to struggling Dolgellau, while Machynlleth earned only their third point of the season with a 1-1 draw at home to mid-table Abermule.

Waterloo Rovers stayed in fourth but closed the gap on second placed Newbridge with a 3-1 win over Aberystwyth University. Two goals from Tom Ellis and one from Nathan James saw off the students in a hard-fought encounter at Maesydre.
