People across the county did their bit and got involved in fundraising for this year’s Children in Need.

Schools in Oswestry and its surrounding areas put on events to raise money for the annual nationwide fundraiser that aims to change the lives of disadvantaged youngsters.

Children across the region were out in force, as well as other north Shropshire residents, to offer their support as a famous face and his team mates passed through on Thursday.

BBC One TV presenter Matt Baker cycled through the area as he led a group of bikers on their Rickshaw Challenge for Children in Need.

Destinations included Ellesmere and Welshampton as Matt and the group cycled from Calais to Salford Quays’ Media City throughout the week.

They were accompanied along the way by more than 1,000 cyclists across the country.

Children at Welshampton C of E Primary School were treated to a special visit by Pudsey the Bear, while Team Rickshaw rode their way along the Mere and through the town centre.

Ellesmere Primary School and Lakelands Academy pupils were out in force lining the streets of the town to cheer on the team as they passed by.

The Rickshaw Challenge team crossed over to Wrexham, Overton and Marchwiel – and then back across the border to Chester en route to their final destination of Manchester.

Overall, the eight-day adventure raised £72,405 and encouraged 1,193 cyclists to take on their own challenges. Fundraisers have ridden a total of 187,619 miles during their challenges.

Elsewhere, children were getting dressed up ready for some fundraising efforts in school.

Natasha Hughes sent in a picture of her daughters, four-year-old Jayceeleigh and three-year-old Darcy Mai in handmade tops ready to celebrate Children in Need – despite being poorly, the girls were happy to get into the fundraising spirit.

Bonnie from Woodside Primary School wore a personalised Children in Need t-shirt to school, along with her pyjamas.

Sisters eight-year-old Ella and three-year-old Lacey also got into the spirit of things and dressed up in all things Pudsey ready for the day.

This year’s Children in Need campaign smashed fundraising goals and raised a record total of £50,595,053.

The annual charity event has now raised more than £1 billion since the first major appeal in 1980.
