There was a "communication error" at the Remembrance Service in Llandrindod Wells last Sunday as the county council failed to provide a wreath.

Councillor Pete Roberts posted on the Llandrindod Solutions Facebook group to apologise on behalf of Powys County Council. The post read: "Please can I express my personal apologies to the British Legion for the embarrassment caused by the failure of Powys County Council to ensure a wreath was present at the memorial for today's service."

Over 100 people have 'reacted' to the Facebook post, with 47 of those reactions being angry, and over 50 people have left comments. People have said that it is "disgusting" and "disgraceful" for the council to have not provided a wreath. However, the council has said that it does not provide wreaths for individual towns or villages.

Cllr Roberts said he was present at the service and that when the council were called to come forward, no representative answered the call. Cllr Roberts said: "I expected a senior officer to come forward.

"I thought someone had been taken ill."

People at the service approached Cllr Roberts to complain about the lack of wreath. He said: "I personally feel embarrassed."

Cllr Roberts said that the mix-up was largely down to a "communication error" and was probably not anybody's fault.

A spokesperson for Powys County Council said: “We are aware of the situation that arose in Llandrindod Wells during Remembrance Sunday.

“The council has never provided wreaths for elected members to lay in their local town or villages. However, we provide a wreath each for the Chairman and Leader of Powys County Council to lay during Remembrance Sunday within their ward.

“The former Chief Executive for Powys County Council used to attend the Remembrance Sunday service in Llandrindod Wells and would lay a wreath as he lived locally but this was not a duty and they opted to do it out of choice.

“If a county councillor who wants to lay a wreath in their ward then they would have to make their own arrangements to do this.”

Cllr Roberts said: "I feel like I had made a mistake. Maybe I should have done a bit more to check."

"It's such a shame it's happened this year of all years," he said.
