AN ART group in Trefonen has been busy crafting poppies in order to mark the end of the First World War.

Trefonen Arty Group, who meet every Wednesday, have been working on the poppy cascade that falls down the war memorial in the centre of Trefonen in Oswestry Road since July.

The poppy display also incorporates the Silent Soldier that has also recently been put up in the village. The project is part of the Wilfred Owen Festival.

Janis Stelfox, a member of the group, said they are all very proud of what has been done in Trefonen to mark the centenary of Armistice Day.

“We have made hundreds of poppies of different sizes, using various methods of manufacture and we have planned how these can best be displayed on the war memorial and adjacent green and in the church,” she said.

“This started fairly modestly in July as an activity by the local ‘arty group’, but it has become a truly community activity with lots of local people, including the schoolchildren, making poppies or providing the raw materials such as wool or plastic bottles.”

The poppy display was unveiled on the war memorial, which lists 31 names of soldiers who served in the First World War from 1914 to 1918.
