MORE than a thousand people gathered in Llangollen town square to commemorate the sacrifices made by its soldiers on Remembrance Sunday.

The Service of Remembrance was held in Llangollen Centenary Square, renovated and renamed this year under the Llangollen Town Council's Centenary Square Project dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the First World War following more than £100,000 funding, which enable extensive landscaping work such as four semi-mature Liquidambar trees, eco-friendly paving and the relocation of the Llangollen War Memorial to create more space for public events and gathering such as that on Sunday, November 11.

The service was led by Venerable Chris Potter and attended by hundreds of people, including ex-servicemen, current military personnel, town and county councillors and the Llangollen Royal British Legion (LRBL).

About 3,000 poppies handmade by volunteers leading up to the event were attached to the wall at the back of the square and provided an emotional setting as David Thomas from the LRBL read out the names of the soldiers from Llangollen that died during the war.

The Llangollen Silver Band concluded the ceremony by leading a parade on a circuit around Castle Street and Bridge Street.

Cllr Jon Haddy, mayor of Llangollen, said: "It was an honour to lay the poppy wreath on behalf of Llangollen Town Council.

"The ceremony went extremely well in the revamped town square.

"The attendance was exceptional, as you would expect on the centenary - between 1,200 and 1,500 people attended and I think they felt it went well too."
