Crowds for this year’s centenary Remembrance Day commemorations in Newtown were the largest seen for some years according to Montgomeryshire AM Russell George.

Mr George joined hundreds of others for the town’s annual remembrance service on Sunday, November 11, as the town fell silent for two minutes at 11am to mark the end of the first world war.

Crowds lined the streets as the procession moved from it’s starting point in Broad Street down to the war memorial monument on New Road where a short service took place and wreaths were laid by members of the town’s armed forces groups.

“It looked like more people than in previous years turned out for the Remembrance Parade in Newtown this year,” he said.

“I’d like to pay tribute to the Royal British legion for all their work.

“A hundred years ago the guns fell silent on the First World War. Today we remembered all those who have sacrificed so much to secure and protect our freedom, and honour the service of our Armed Forces and veterans.”
