HUGE crowds gathered to pay their respects to the fallen as Oswestry marked Armistice Day.

The public turned out in droves at the Memorial Gates and St Oswald's Parish Church to honour those who had given their lives in the Great War and other conflicts around the world.

Mayor of Oswestry, Councillor Sandy Best, told the crowd that it had been the town's largest Remembrance gathering in recent years.

"This proudly demonstrates the community spirit in our town, and the willingness of so many to belong to organisations and give service above self," she said

"This year we marked the 100th year since the end of the Great War. As residents and visitors to Oswestry alike we also proudly looked through the Memorial Gates at our statue of the famous son of Oswestry, the war poet Wilfred Owen."

Former service personnel, cadets, various other youth organisations, councillors and emergency service representatives joined Porthywaen Silver Band on a parade through the town – with large crowds lining the route of the procession to pay their respects to the fallen.
