PROPOSALS to upgrade a caravan park in Flintshire have been given the green light.

It will see Barlows Caravan Park in Caerwys extended, as well as the relocation of 50 static holiday caravans and 90 touring caravan pitches.

Six glamping pitches will also be created, along with a new toilet block.

Cllr Chris Bithell, Flintshire Council’s cabinet member for planning, said the caravan park had been in existence for almost 60 years and was well run by its owner.

Addressing a recent planning committee meeting, he said: “Tourism is a vital part of the national economy of Wales and North Wales in particular.

“We’re not comparing as a county with the areas further west in Gwynedd and Anglesey.

“Nevertheless, we do have very attractive countryside here which does attract people to our locality to appreciate it and spend money here.

“It’s surprising the number of people you meet in the town of Mold on a weekend who are strangers, you engage them in conversation and they tell you they’re staying in local caravan parks for the weekend.”

The proposals were approved by the committee with 14 votes in favour and only Mostyn councillor Patrick Heesom against them.
