OUTSIDE bodies could keep their records in safety at a Powys County Council building at Llandrindod Wells .

The Archives and Information Management has moved into unit 29 on the Ddole Road Industrial Estate in Llandrindod Wells.

Under the scheme of delegation, Cllr Phyl Davies, the portfolio holder for Highways, Recycling and Assets, has decided: "To support the proposal that storage along with records management service by the council's Information Management Service is marketed to external organisations."

This reason behind this is to: "Support the key objectives and principles of the Council Income Management and Service Cost Recovery Policy which includes provision for income generated from fees and charges to public, business and other organisations."

In 2017, the council finished refurbishing the unit to accommodate both its Information Management and Archive Service.

According to the report: "Charges will be determined by the amount of storage space required and the level of records management agreed, including anticipated number of file retrievals, returns and destructions.

"Increasing the amount of income within the authority allows the council to become more resilient to the budget cuts proposed by the by the Welsh Government and allows the council to continue to provide valued services to its residents."

The Information Management Service manages and stores around 250,000 files of records that are kept for a certain period of time for legal , administrative and operational reasons.

The Archives collects and preserves records relating to Powys' cultural and historical past and provides access to them through a public search room.

It holds material dating from the 14th century to the present day.

As part of the refurbishment project, two large strongrooms have been created and are fitted with mobile racking, creating a total capacity of nearly 15,000 linear metres.

Its store has air handling units which control temperature and humidity.

To protect the historical records, there is enhanced fire protection across the whole building with CCTV provide a high level of security.
