MEMBERS of a church have created a fitting tribute to the heroes of the Great War.

St Mary's Church in Selattyn is hosting an exhibition to mark the centenary of the Armistice and to commemorate the 25 men listed on the village war memorial.

The centrepiece of the exhibition is a giant cascade of poppies on the church wall, created by worshippers and children from Selattyn C of E Primary School.

Treasurer Betty Shaw organised the exhibition, which also features photographs and cap badges of servicemen from the parish who gave their lives in the 1914-18 conflict, as well as flower arrangements by church goers.

She said: "I think it's important to carry on remembering them year by year. There will always be a Remembrance service here."

Miss Shaw thanked all those who had contributed to the exhibition – which opened on Saturday – including Annie Kerr, who came up with the idea for the cascade and put it together with her husband Charlie.

Information for the exhibition came from research by Neil Simon and Gary Bick for a soon-to-published book on the First World War by Selattyn and Gobowen Parish Council.

Miss Shaw praised their "tireless" research and added: "It would only have been half a show if we could not have got that information. They have been very good in getting it and letting us show it.

"I just feel it's a very nice commemoration for the men."

The exhibition runs until next Saturday (November 17), when St Mary's Church will host a Christmas fair from 10am to midday.

Tomorrow (Sunday), the church will host a Remembrance service at 10am and there will be a wreath-laying ceremony at the warm memorial at 11am.
