PRESTATYN rotary club celebrated World Polio Day by planting 1,000 purple crocus bulbs.

The club was helped by pupils at Ysgol Bodnant.

The purple crocus is a symbol of rotary’s worldwide campaign to eradicate polio, with its colour representing the purple dye used to mark the finger of a child who has been immunise.

A spokesperson for the club said: "The general aim is to generate awareness towards the world-wide eradication of polio as well as to commemorate the efforts of the thousands of volunteers committed to the eradication of polio. The purchase of the bulbs also raises money for the overall campaign.

"By 2005 there were just 16 countries with confirmed cases, still endemic in six of them. By the end of 2014 nine countries had confirmed cases, three of these were still endemic. One year later just Afghanistan and Pakistan had seventy cases between them.

"We are that close to eradicating this terrible debilitating disease from the planet."
