PLANS to build a new petrol station, drive thru coffee shop and convenience store next to a golf club have been approved.

Proposals for a large service station next to Wrexham Golf Club were put on hold by councillors at two separate planning meetings in July and August because of road safety concerns.

However, the application by Liberty Properties Limited has now been approved by Wrexham Council’s planning committee after traffic calming measures were put forward.

It includes the introduction of new road markings and changes to the layout of the Holt Road roundabout.

In a report Lawrence Isted, the authority’s head of environment and planning, said: “Members will recall that this application was presented to the August 2018 planning committee meeting.

“Members resolved at that meeting to defer the application to enable further details to be provided in respect of potential speed reduction measures at the roundabout, for further consideration.

“The consultant has discussed with highway officers whether the introduction of yellow transverse bar markings on the A5156 would be considered as an improvements option to slow traffic speeds at the junction.

“The consultant has also looked at alternative options should the committee feel that yellow transverse bar markings are inappropriate.

“The committee is therefore requested to consider both the options to slow traffic (yellow transverse bar markings) and/or improve layout of the roundabout (concentric-spiral markings).

“My unchanged recommendation is that planning permission should be granted.”

Golf club staff and members have previously reported serious concerns about extra traffic using the roundabout.

According to the report, there have been four collisions on the roundabout since 2013.

One was described as serious while the others were described as ‘slight severity’.

Cllr Paul Roberts said he feared the roundabout the petrol station would be accessed from was ‘an accident waiting to happen’.

Cllr Ronnie Prince added that he also had concerns about people accessing the site on foot.

However, the majority of councillors voted in favour of the proposals at a meeting at Wrexham’s Guildhall.

The motion was carried by a total of 10 votes to five.
