VOLUNTEERS are furious after the latest incident at an ancient monument.

Jonjo Evans, chairman of the trustees of Whittington Castle, thinks residents will be outraged to learn that a shed on the medieval site has been ram-raided.

Mr Evans branded whoever caused the damage "idiots" said that repairing the damage would "take a big chunk" out of money raised by the community for the castle after a vandalism attack a fortnight ago.

The shed door was badly dented and a security camera was damaged in the incident, which is thought to have happened late on Monday.

"It's just starting to get us down really. There was a very positive reaction from the village and other people with regards to the vandalism that was done on the castle and then this goes and happens," he said

"It's just pointless - there's nothing in the shed apart from wedding venue-type stuff."

The ram-raid comes around two weeks after yobs daubed obscenities on the castle and in other areas of Whittington.

Resident Mick Thompkins has so fair raised around £1,800 for the castle with an online crowdfunding campaign.

Mr Evans added that pupils at Whittington School has raised £330 with a cake sale, and businesses have also donated their services to help the castle.

Fellow trustee Joy Duddell was also at the scene to inspect the damage.

"Trustees, the castle manager, volunteers - we all work really hard to keep this place as a place for the public enjoy with very few restrictions, and it's just frustrating that mindless thugs do this kind of stuff and it costs money," she said.

Inspector Tracy Ryan, of West Mercia police, said that the incident was reported shortly before 10.30pm on Monday.

Insp Ryan said that the vehicle appeared to have reversed into the garage door – indicated by shattered glass near the building – pushing it back and "stopping them from effectively getting in".

She added that whoever was responsible may have managed still to get in, but it was unclear whether anything had been stolen.

Police were not aware of the raid being linked to any other incidents, but there were concerns over why it had happened.

"We don't believe that there would have been anything of value in their and we're appealing to anyone who has seen anything in the area, any suspicious vehicles, to contact us with any information they have got."

West Mercia Police can be contacted on 101, quoting reference 689C October 29.
