A TRIBUTE has been created to honour the role of nurses during the First World War.

Care at home company Allen Douglas has commissioned artwork on the outside of its offices on Church Street, Oswestry, to honour the courage and compassion shown by nurses who treated patients during the Great War.

CEO Andrew Harris said: "Allenby Douglas was set up with nursing as its heart and because of this heritage we wanted to recognise and remember the crucial part played by nurses in the First World War, particularly in this special year of Remembrance.

"We believe that there is no other depiction of nurses as part of the Remembrance in Oswestry and as this was bespoke, commissioned artwork, there will be no others in the country."

Artist Rob Howell, of Weston Rhyn, created the silhouetted images of nurses which proudly adorn the gate pillars at the office entrance.

"Silhouettes and paintings of soldiers are now a common sight in the lead up to this the 100th year since the end of the First World War, but we wanted to remember the crucial part that nurses played in this and subsequent wars," Mr Harris added

"Being opposite the park gates in Oswestry adds to the poignancy at this time of year. We were delighted that Councillor Sandy Best, the mayor of Oswestry, spotted them the morning after they were painted and requested a photograph with us."

Cllr Best was joined by Mr Harris and care co-ordinators Kelly Griffiths and Charlotte Smith.
